Survivor 33.1 “May The Best Generation Win”

Hi everyone!

Welcome to this season’s coverage of Survivor!  If you’re a subscriber to this site, this post should show up in your email.  If it doesn’t, drop me a message at and I’ll try to fix that.  Thanks!

As for last night’s premiere…

Well, every season of Survivor starts out with a gimmick.  One of the great things about Survivor is that, even though it starts out with a gimmick and usually pushes that gimmick pretty hard, the gimmick always eventually gets abandoned.  After a few episodes, there’s always a tribal reshuffle.  Add to that, the castaways are often too busy simply trying to stay alive to spend too much time obsessing on the gimmick.

This season’s gimmick is Millennials vs. Gen X.  It’s an okay gimmick as far as Survivor is concerned, though I don’t think it’s quite as clever as Brains, Brawn, Beauty or that time that one tribe got everything while the other tribe started out with nothing.  Last night’s premier emphasized the generational divide to almost a comical extent but I have a feeling that it will be abandoned after a few episodes.

To be honest, I would have called this season Survivor: Young vs. Old.  Though the majority of the episode was devoted to showing the Millennials screwing up, I really wasn’t the surprised when they won the immunity comp.  Even when they were occasionally behind, they were never that far behind.  Physically, the Millennials are in better shape than Gen X.  And that’s always going to be an advantage, especially in team challenges.

I’m a Millennial but I hate my generation so I have to admit to being a little torn about which tribe I want to see win.  And, in many ways, the Millennial Tripe represented every negative stereotype about my generation.  Hopefully, that was just a case of editing and they’ll be a little less annoying as the season proceeds.

Here’s my initial impressions of the players:

Takali Tribe (Gen X);

Rachel Ako — Rachel talked too much and said she was great at puzzles.  As soon as I saw her volunteering to do a puzzle, I knew that Takali was going to lose immunity and Rachel was going to be in trouble.  Never volunteer to do anything.

Sunday Bourquest — Sunday seems like she’s nice but I’ll be surprised if she makes it to the merge.

Chris Hammons — Chris seems like he could emerge as a strong player.  He’s one of those hard-working, physically competitive players who always seems to make it to the merge but never to the final three.

Lucy Huang — Lucy did not make a huge impression on me.  Maybe she’ll get a chance to shine in a future episode.

Bret LaBelle — Bret appears to be this season’s burly, blue collar Boston guy.  He seems like a natural soul mate for Chris.

Jessica Lewis — Jessica is an assistant district attorney.  At the start of the game, when the two tribes were grabbing supplies, Jessica grabbed a parchment.  According to the parchment, if Jessica makes it to Day 36, she’ll receive an advantage.

Ken McNickle — Ken is the model who claims to have spent the last two years living off the grid.  Ken came across as being a little full of himself.  If he knows what he’s talking about, he’ll be okay.  If he turns out to just be a blowhard, he’s going to get voted off quickly.

CeCe Taylor — CeCe seems like she’s nice but, otherwise, didn’t make much of an impression.  For some reason, she received a lot of votes at tribal council.  It wasn’t enough to get her voted off the island but still, I was surprised when I discovered people had voted for her.  Hopefully, during the next episode, we’ll get an explanation as to why so many people voted for CeCe.

Paul Wachter — At 52, Paul is the oldest castaway this season.  He seems like a rather gruff but likable character.  According to the preview of next week’s episode, a member of Takali is going to have a medical emergency.  I have a feeling it’ll be Paul.

David Wright — I was surprised that David didn’t get voted out.  He is way too paranoid and has no idea when to stop talking.  A part of me cringed whenever David was onscreen but then another part of me wanted to see what he would say next.  If David somehow manages to avoid getting kicked out of his tribe, I think he could be one of the most controversial castaways of all time.  He’ll be the guy you either love or hate.

Vanua Tribe (Millennials)

Michaela Bradshaw — Michaela’s from my home state!  Otherwise, she didn’t make much of an impression on me.

Figgy Figuero — Figgy is this season’s “I’m too flirty to be smart” castaway.  Figgy says that she hopes to go home with both a million dollars and a husband.  Bleh.  If you have a million dollars, why do you need a husband?

Adam Klein —  Adam has a nice smile.

Michelle Schubert — Michelle is in a four-person alliance with Figgy, Taylor, and Jay.  Unfortunately, none of them appears to be smart enough to realize that the rest of their tribe dislikes them.

Hannah Shapiro — Hannah is this season’s bitter girl.  In the style of last season’s Aubry, she appears to be set on targeting anyone who she feels is too physically attractive.

Zeke Smith — Zeke is an odd one.  He’s only 28 but he looks like he’s in his 40s.  With his mustache and his Hawaiian shirt and his somewhat nasal voice, it was kind of easy to dismiss Zeke but, by the end of the episode, he was emerging as his tribe’s leader.  He stepped up to get the tribe’s shelter made and also started fire.  Zeke says that he’s not comfortable with the Millennial label.  Zeke is either going to do very well or he’s going to get voted off for being bossy.  That’s what always happens to anyone who emerges as a leader early on in the game.

Jay Starrett — Jay is the hot real estate guy, who appears to not be that bright.  He started a pretty people alliance with Taylor, Michelle, and Figgy.

Taylor Lee Stocker — Could Taylor be this season’s Fabio, a total airhead who comes out of nowhere to win?  I hope not.  Taylor’s annoying.

Mari Takahasi — Mari makes her living playing video games on YouTube.  Mari declared herself to be the leader of the Millennial outcasts, which I think will lead to conflict with Hannah, who apparently also wants to be the outcast leader.

Will Wahl — Will’s a high school student!  He’s the youngest castaway ever!  Otherwise, he didn’t make much of an impression on me.

As for last night’s episode, the highlight was definitely the two tribes being evacuated from the beach, as the result of a cyclone.  The evacuation reportedly lasted for several days.  This was the first time that ever happened on the show and it reminded me of why I like Survivor.  You can actually die while playing Survivor.  They’re not kidding when they say that the game is about survival.

As for the immunity challenge, Gen X lost because Rachel and David struggled on the puzzle and squandered a narrow lead.  I honestly thought that David would be voted out (and he didn’t help himself by clearly searching or an immunity idol) but instead, it was Rachel who was the first voted off the island.  (Rachel, it should be noted, never really took any responsibility for struggling with the puzzle whereas David was literally begging people not to vote for him.)

The tribe has spoken!

Next week, it appears that someone will have a heart attack!  I’m predicting Paul.

What did everyone else think about the season premiere of Survivor?

Hi, Janna! This blog is always a little bit quieter than the Big Brother Blog. Since Big Brother is a 24/7 game, there’s always something new to talk about, whereas Survivor we have to wait from week to week to discover what happens. 🙂

I’m a Gen Xer and some of that team made me cringe because they seemed too grumpy and set in their ways for my taste. On the other hand the millennials are playing like they’re on a weekend camping trip and are more excited about hooking up. I wonder if Jason Vorhees is lurking in the jungle waiting for that to happen.

Your right about Paul, I think he’s the one who has the heart attack. Anyway I’m looking forward to when they break up the tribes and do a mix, as I think that would be more interesting.

Lisa Marie, great run down on the Survivor players. It will take a few weeks to get to know all of them, but from what we saw, I think you did a good job. I was shocked David wasn’t eliminated, he is useless and a whiner, although Rachel didn’t seem to be too bright and I agree she should have never volunteered to do the puzzle! I am pulling for GenX, but I think they will have a hard time against the millennials in the challenges.

At tribal council GenX seemed to be all over the map with their voting, which surprised me. David made it clear to everyone how he hated camping and bugs and he didn’t help with the shelter. He spent most of his time looking for an immunity idol and the idiot did this in front of his tribe members. SMH. I really thought he would have been evicted by a 9 to 1 vote! I still can’t understand why they voted Rachel out instead of David!!

Thanks, Betty! I was surprised too but I do think it’s that Rachel never really apologized whereas David was practically begging them not to kick him out. Plus, some of the Gen X tribe were saying that David could also be funny when he wasn’t going crazy.

Question. I watched the episode (great) but I watched with a Gen 1948 brain. Are the Mils and Gens each on the same team? When Jeff handed but the buffs all the survivors were together so it seems unlikely the tribes were purely Mil or Gen. Wouldn’t they be mixed? If so, what’s the make-up of each tribe as to total Gen and total Mil per each tribe?

Lisa, I also felt when Rachel volunteered to do the puzzle that it would be her good-bye moment. People who say they are good at puzzles usually aren’t and get voted out. Still, I would have liked to see David escorted off the island permanently. I think he’d be as relieved to leave as I would be to see him leave. Lisa, you also nailed each person fabulously. It usually takes me weeks to get the contestants straight, but with your description I already have a sense of how to recognize most of them. Thanks!!!!

I also liked the new twists of grabbing items for each team and loved the fishing gear vs chickens. Teach a team to fish and they’ll eat all season. Give a team chickens and they’ll have breakfast. Very telling choices.

    Lisa, you rock!!!

Pretty good start IMO. I also enjoyed them selecting items at the beginning. And I really liked the shortcut twist in the comp… hope they do more of that. Throw a little risk vs reward in there.

I think the reason CeCe got 3 votes was because she seemed to be real tight with Rachel. Hard to tell when they edit 4 days down to about 65 minutes air time. I have CeCe in my pool so I was yelling at the screen for her to get away from Rachel! LOL…. scared me when she started getting votes… thought I was getting blindsided! 😆

Hi, JT! Good to see you here! 🙂 CeCe did seem awfully close to Rachel and not particularly close to anyone else. I guess they divided the votes so, in case Rachel did have an idol, they could at least get rid of her biggest ally.

Nice analysis, Lisa. I pretty much agree. It’s hard to tell what makes people vote the first time… well no surprise about Rachel, but CeCe and Sunday. Things we didn’t see. I’ll have to go back and see who voted for who again.

Looks like it is weak on story, Bob… but not the action. I always enjoy Lisa’s movie reviews and respect her opinions.

btw… Chris Pratt and Ana Farris bought a house on San Juan Island and are always in Friday Harbor posing with the kids for selfies, a cool couple. It’s fun to see the kids fb pages with the photos.

Hey, where did you get a smiling Mr Green???

Another question. Will the all access BB be blogged about on this particular blog or on another blog all its own?

Janna, it’s hard to scale back after a whole summer of checking comments (and making them) at least 3 or 30 times a day. Like Lisa said, a once a week show won’t have the need of a daily blog. I, too, am suffering from withdrawals and am trying to figure out where I can get a BB fix on the street. Even the OOT version will only have one episode a week. Awk! I’m guessing OOT won’t have live feeds either. It will be quite an adjustment for us BB addicts.

    1. Justaguy (JT)

Lisa might be around to answer soon…. but I got the impression she would be doing BB OTT at BB Blog?? Good question though.

BB OTT will have feeds. True.. there will only be 1 episode per week (on Wednesdays)… but the rest of the time will be feeds like normal. So should be plenty to write / chat about.

      1. Justaguy (JT)

The impression I get is the Wednesday episodes will be made available at CBS All Access On Demand… at 9pm CST.
The feeds will just run normally and separate from episodes.
But I don’t think there are live shows?? Plus they would have to do every episode like a FF week.
I guess it would work…. if you think about it that’s what Survivor does… they cram everything from vote to vote in 1 hour.
Like we’ve all said…. Survivor really needs to get a 2nd day of the week for an episode!!
They have so much more that we’d like to see but it gets cut for time… I’d like to see more of the dynamics that lead to people getting voted off!! 🙂

      2. tedstrutz

I’m sure they have thought about it, but Survivor is more in Prime Seasons for want of a better word than BB. So that’s probably why. What would be cool, is if they put some content on the CBS All Access site, like they do with Ponderosa. I’m looking forward to seeing why CECE got so many votes.

  8. two

Thank you, Lisa and JT! I feel so much better about OTT having feeds so I won’t be languishing between weekly episodes. I too wish Survivor and AR would have another show a week. It could easily be done. They both must have enough taped for it, and I’d love to be able to really get to know the contestants like we do on BB. The only time I ever heard Jeff say something unkind to Jordan was on AR and I wondered why it wasn’t cut out. They were America’s sweethearts, after all.

  9. two

Ted! Who could forget Brendon and Rachel? I just figured since I was the only person in America who liked Rachel, she and Brendon couldn’t be counted as an America’s sweetheart couple. : ) She got on my last nerve, but she played a heck of a game.

Remember the chunky annoying guy who was evacuated because of what seemed to be made-up medical issues back a couple of seasons? He took the immunity idol with him as a “souvenir”. That may be why the hint that Jessica found on Day 1 said she must pass it on to someone else if she were voted out before day 36.

So far I’m really liking these new twists which are really new twists unlike the convoluted “unexpected” twists on BB.

    1. pattigisme

Oh wow! Another who liked Rachel and Brandon! (Sorry I know this is the Survivor blog) but “Two” wrote that they thought they were the only one to actually like Rachel. I think I liked her for the same reasons you did, and gir incredibly annoyed at her too for her whining and crying! She really was one heck of a good player! Good to see there was another fan! 😃

  10. two

Patigisme! I guess the Rachel/Brandon Club has at least two members. Two who will admit to liking her anyway!

With Survivor blog being so quiet most of the week, I don’t think anyone will blame us for not being able to shed our BB clothes all at once. : )

Tell you who I’m not a fan of…everyone who was on Survivor when Boston Rob won. No one even played – just followed him blindly. I was ready to knock some heads together. The chunky guy who took the idol home with him for a souvenir – I can see his face and hear his voice but his name escapes me. I wish it were the other way around! : )
