The Amazing Race 30 Episode 4 “Gotta Put Your Sole Into It”

Hi, y’all!

Tonight, we had a two hour episode of The Amazing Race.  With season 30 scheduled to air its final episode in less than a month, on February 21st to be exact, I imagine that we’re going to have a few more two hours episodes in the weeks to come.

This episode saw the teams going from Morocco to France, which looked as beautiful as ever.  (I always enjoy it when the Race goes to France.)  At the end of the first hour, Shawn and Cedric were the last team to step up to the mat and, sadly, they were eliminated.  At the end of the second hour, the same fate befell Joey and Tim, the competitive eaters.  So, that means Phil will no longer be able to make any jokes about them eating their way out of trouble.  I was sad to see Shawn and Cedric go.  To be honest, Joey and Tim never made much of an impression on me.

At this point, all of the remaining teams are legitimate contenders to win.  The producers did a good job with casting this season.  Every team has had their strong moments and every team has had a moment or two (or three) of weakness.  Probably the most consistently strong team has been Kristi and Jen, who have yet to finish anywhere lower than third place.  However, tonight, Brittany and Lucas came in first at the end of the 5th leg after coming in 8th at the end of the 4th.  Eric and Daniel, who have consistently been finishing at the back of the pack, suddenly surged forward and managed to finish in third place.  Meanwhile, Cody and Jessica went from 2nd to 6th and Alex and Conor went from 1st to 5th.  It’s an unpredictable race.

This episode also saw the return of the Head-to-Head at the end of the 4th leg.  I’m still not a fan of the Head-to-Head and I hope it’s an experiment that will not be repeated in future seasons.  Tonight, even if they hadn’t had the head-to-head challenge, Shawn and Cedric would have still been the last to arrive and they would have been eliminated.  As a result, it didn’t feel as egregiously unfair as it did at the end of the 2nd leg.

Here’s how everyone did, in order of how they finished the fifth leg of the race:

Coming in first, Brittany and Lucas!  As I said, they went from finishing 8th during the 4th leg to finishing 1st during the 5th leg.  At the pit stop, Lucas asked Brittany to marry him, which I would have been excited about if I actually liked either one of them.  But since they’re both kind of annoying, it didn’t really do much for me.  If anything, the show spent way too much time on Lucas’s proposal.  I get the feeling the show’s editors needed to fill some space because they really dragged all that out.

Coming in second, Kristi and Jen!  They’re consistently strong and I’ll be shocked if they’re not one of the final three teams racing to the finish line.

Coming in third, Eric and Daniel!  After struggling for most of the race, things finally started to click for them during the fifth leg of the race.  It’ll be interesting to see if they can take advantage of this new momentum or if it was just a fluke.

Coming in fourth, Henry and Evan!  Team Yale is still in it, though they’ve struggled a bit in some of the last legs.  Evan went overboard about her “broken” tooth.  The way she described it, it sounded as if she had knocked an entire tooth out of her mouth, instead of just getting a small chip.

Coming in fifth, Alex and Conor!  Team Goofy.  They came in first during the fourth leg and then fell all the way to fifth during the next leg.  Obviously, they can win but they need to work on being consistently strong.  After a few more legs, there’s not going to be much room for error.

Coming in sixth, Cody and Jessica!  Cody and Jessica are a strong team, though I don’t know if they’re strong enough to actually make it to the finale.  I could easily see them getting eliminated right before the final leg of the race.  That just seems to be the way their luck is running.  Next episode, there’s going to be U-turn and it wouldn’t surprise me if Cody and Jessica got U-turned.  That said, U-turns are almost always used during non-elimination legs.  (That’s one reason why I would never U-turn anyone.)  We’ll have to see what happens with that.

Coming in seventh, Trevor and Chris!  Trevor and Chris are finally showing some personality.  They’re snarky and fun but they have yet to finish higher than 4th place.  They’re going to need to pick up the pace if they don’t want to get eliminated.

Coming in 8th and getting eliminated, Joey and Tim.  They seemed like nice guys but, as I said, neither one really made a huge impression on me.  For the most part, they only seemed to be on the show so Phil could make jokes about their occupation.

And, of course, at the end of the 4th leg, Shawn and Cedric came in 9th and were eliminated.  I was sorry to see them go.  They played hard, they worked well together, but they just had the worst luck with almost everything.

Next week … U-turn!  I’m predicting Cody and Jessica get U-turned but I’m also predicting that it’ll be a non-elimination leg.  Agree?  Disagree? Let me know!

I agree with pretty much your thoughts Lisa… EXCEPT… a small chip?… give poor Evan a break, any chip of a tooth would be traumatic, and she did not dwell on it after that. If you or Dazzling chipped a tooth you would be screaming bloody murder. Nice, she could get it fixed. I’m not a big fan of that team, as they kind of have a superior air about them, something abrasive, I can’t put my finger on it.
CBS and the producers of these shows love those engagement moments and always milk them. I agree with you about the engaged couple and kind of wished they had lost to the basketball players. The head to head is different, and I’m not a big fan either, kind of like being eliminated because of a bad cab driver. Speaking of the basketball players… shouldn’t Shawn have done the boat challenge? Those guys were on borrowed time anyway, as I don’t see them being that bright Amazing Race wise, and I’m surprised Cedric was not in better shape, being an athlete and knowing how to do it.
I wasn’t sad to see the Eaters go (although they were starting to grow on me) but again would have liked to have seen the Fiances go in their place.
I love Kristi and Jen, wonder if Jen will be skiing in the Olympics, and would love to see them win, or Jody. I liked Jody on BB and really liking them on TAR. The racecar guys are fun and I remember when Alex won the 500. I don’t know Conner, but he really looks familiar, I don’t watch much Indy Car racing. I like the violinists and was kind of sweating it when they were lost. Yes, it was nice to see the firemen do better, they are nice guys and it’s fun to see when their personality comes out.

Thanks for the forum. I’m sure Betty will be here soon to put her two cents in.

I didn’t realize this was a two hour show until the basketball players got eliminated. Sad to see them go but you could see it coming early on.
The engagement had me tearing up and gagging at the same time. Saw it coming also.
The race car drivers are getting on my last nerves. The short one is quite cocky and likes to make sure we know he knows how to drive. He bugs me a lot!
Evans tooth freaked me out. So glad they let her get it fixed. I wouldn’t have been able to go on if it were me. That team still irritates me. Henry said Evan “literally” knocked her tooth out. No she didn’t. For a smart guy he isn’t so smarts! Lol.
And Team Big Brother. Totally hated them on BB but really want them to be in the final 3 on this show. So weird. I just love how they get along with each other.
    Still love the skiers.
